If you’re a human with two eyes and an internet connection, there’s no doubt you’ve been exposed to at least one of the above headlines. They’re eye-catching, convincing and appealing.

We all want to make money, there’s no doubt about that.

But i think we’ve got it all wrong. Money was never meant to be the end goal. Money was created as a means to trade. It was developed as a representation of value not value itself.

When we set our own goals and priorities around the accumulation of money we enter the rat race. At that point, you’re stacking benjamins for the sake of stacking benjamins. In my opinion money isn’t the end goal; experiences and wealth of character is.

When i’m lying there on my death bed, slowly succumbing to some form of cancer caused by a chemical consciously introduced by some evil corporation, i’m not going to give a single flying, swimming or jogging fuck about how much money i have in my bank.

I’ll care about experience, character and value — the countries visited, the cultures immersed in, the people I've met, the friends I've cherished, the children I've raised, the wife I've loved, the impact I've had — because that’s what matters.

Sure, money facilitates all of the above, but having X amount of money when i die isn’t something i’ll take pride in. I’d rather die fiscally poor and rich in experience, character and love.

Too often we glamorise the building of wealth as if there’s some intrinsic value in it. We forget that money’s just a made up system created to maintain a hierarchical order. Those with more money have more power, those with less money have less power.

True, this system works, but you don’t need to buy in to the idea that money is everything. Think about it, the reason you want financial freedom is so that you can have new experiences, buy fast cars and eat at fancy restaurants without worrying about the bill.

You want money because of what it unlocks, not money itself.

Money for anything other than experience, value and character is vanity.

Money is just numbers in a bank account made up by financial institutions. It’s an amalgamation of characters represented on your iPhone that could change at any point. Santander could choose to add 3 zeros or take 3 zeros away at a whim. After all, it’s just a number, there’s not a box sitting there with your name on it and the physical cash within it.

Smoke some weed, drop some acid, resolve to meditate. Do what it takes to have a moment of deep introspection where you consider your deepest wants and desires. Think beyond the veil of cash, contemplate your character.

I get caught up in this crowd-think almost daily. My mind wanders to the subject of money and before long i’m anxious about the possibility of not making money, not having enough money and if i should be earning money right now.

I’m trying hard to yeet myself out of this perpetually deluded roundabout.

My actions should be driven by values; not by financial wealth.

As with most of my articles, this post isn’t meant to inform or coddle your opinion. It’s a raw, authentic, regurgitation of my innermost thoughts and feelings. Connect with it if you’d like, ignore it otherwise.

So for me, and for you, let’s go out there and earn lots of money, but not for the sake of earning money. Instead, let’s do it for the sake of satiating our deepest wants and desires. Do it because you want to travel the world. Do it because you want to spend your time painting and drawing. Do it because you want to live on a ranch in the middle of butt-fuck nowhere smoking cigarettes and drinking whiskey. Do it for any reason other than for money itself.

As Always,

Yours Honestly,

Liam Lawson.
